ICRW Asia
Our History
In 1998, the International Center for Research on Women established an office in New Delhi, India, to oversee a pioneering five-year study. This study was among the first to examine the extent of domestic violence in India and played a critical role in bringing about policy changes to protect women. Subsequently, ICRW was registered in India as an independent organization on 3rd January 2002. This enabled us to broaden our efforts to promote gender-equitable development and respond to the pressing challenges faced by women, girls, and structurally excluded populations in their communities.
Our Work

ICRW Asia advances gender equality by strengthening systems, transforming communities, and amplifying women’s voices. Our flagship Gender Equity Movement in Schools (GEMS) in Jharkhand promotes gender equality across 270 schools by partnering with state education departments to audit textbooks, develop gender-responsive curricula, and create inclusive school guidelines. Complementing this, MANthan drives social transformation in Jamtara’s villages by engaging young men as allies, encouraging reflection on masculinity, and building intergenerational dialogues to challenge gender norms. Together with Strengthening Systems to address Gender Based Violence in Jharkhand, these programs reinforce ICRW’s commitment to nurturing safer, more equitable environments for women and girls by integrating prevention and redressal mechanisms into community and institutional systems.
We also lead initiatives that drive systemic and behavioral change; documenting women’s empowerment journeys in the informal sector, developing practical toolkits to engage men and boys in gender equality, and supporting reproductive choice through the Iterative Learning Initiative.
Through research and programs such as UMANG, PAnKH, PLAN-IT Girls, Advancing Women’s Leadership, and REBUILD, we co-create solutions with communities and institutions to strengthen accountability, promote feminist leadership, and build inclusive systems that work for women and girls. Our initiatives on women’s leadership in the health sector equip women professionals to lead with confidence, collaborate across disciplines, and embed gender-transformative practices in institutions. The Chingaari initiative represents a new and much-needed step in this journey: amplifying women’s voices, fostering collective empowerment, and sparking change from within communities.
