Who We Are
For 47 years, the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) has set the global agenda for gender equity, inclusion, and shared prosperity with action-oriented research and solutions. Our global experts generate groundbreaking insights and develop gender transformative strategies on topics like economic opportunity and security, health and reproductive rights, gender norms, and climate action.
Our Vision
An equitable, sustainable, and prosperous world where women, girls, and structurally excluded populations lead and thrive.
Our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Statement
We aim to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment within our institution, sector, and ecosystem. Our commitment to these standards informs all aspects of our work, including our research, advocacy, messaging, visual representation, hiring and partner and vendor selection.
Our History
Founded in 1976 in response to concerns that international development interventions were benefiting men and women unequally, ICRW was established to make visible the invisible.
Our Approach
With a deep regional presence and a globally connected network of researchers and research users, we are establishing our Gender Centers of Excellence (GCoEs) in Asia and Africa to be world-class institutions. Characterized by their trusted connection to the communities where they operate, the GCoEs demonstrate that both proximity and empiricism are critical to shaping global policy and actions. Actionable insights from our GCoEs will be shared across our global ecosystem and amplified by ICRW’s platforms to foster knowledge-sharing and deepen collaboration.
We believe that moving from a traditional international non-profit structure with a headquarters in the Global North and regional offices in the Global South into a network system where agendas are set in the South and supported by the North is the correct way for us to serve women, girls, and structurally excluded populations.
Through the Gender Centers of Excellence, we will support the next generation of researchers, activists, and practitioners locally and regionally to continue to recalibrate power away from the Global North and to support local ecosystems.
