ICRW Americas
Our Work
Our Americas team works across North, South, and Central America to advance gender equality in economies and societies. Our efforts focus on expanding economic opportunities for women, girls and structurally excluded populations and protecting and advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights across the region.
Building on our seminal work to promote gender equality through foreign policy and international cooperation and ensure financing for gender equality at both national and international levels, we continue to advocate for intersectional, rights-based, and feminist approaches to public policy, funding, and operations.
We engage multilateral organizations, governments, and other international stakeholders to ensure progress toward existing commitments, including those outlined at the 2025 Fourth Financing for Development Conference, the G7, the G20, and the Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Conference on Women. At the same time, we support policymakers in identifying new levers of progress and reimagining what is possible for gender equality across the region.
Our History
The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) was established in 1976 in response to the absence of evidence on gender-differentiated impacts of international development interventions. Since our founding, we have aimed to shed light on the invisible roles, needs, and contributions of women, challenging the misconception that households were solely led by men. Through groundbreaking research, such as highlighting the effectiveness of microfinance programs for empowering women in Latin America, and pioneering advocacy efforts on issues like HIV/AIDS, ICRW has played a crucial role in shaping policies and programs that promote gender equality and reduce global poverty, all while striving to improve the lives of women, girls, and structurally excluded populations.
As the global development paradigm has shifted over the years, we have evolved into a decentralized global network to better meet the needs of the communities we serve. What was previously our U.S. office is now our Americas office, broadening our focus and deepening our engagement across the region.
