The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) announces the appointment of two new members to its Board of Directors, Naila Kabeer, professor of gender and development at the London School of Economics, and Firoza Mehrotra, a global development expert based in Delhi, India.

“I am pleased to welcome two incredibly talented and visionary women whose extensive experience advocating for gender equality and women’s empowerment will be of tremendous benefit to the board and the organization as a whole,” said Sarah Degnan Kambou, ICRW President.

Naila Kabeer is currently professor of gender and development at the Gender Institute, London School of Economics (LSE). Prior to joining LSE, Kabeer was Professor of Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at London University and Professorial Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex where she worked for many years. Her research interests include gender, poverty, social exclusion, labor markets and livelihoods, social protection and citizenship and much of her research is focused on South and South East Asia.

Kabeer is the author of numerous books, including: Global Perspectives on Gender Equality (2008), World Survey on the Role of Women in Development (2009); and Mainstreaming Gender Equality in Poverty Eradication and the Millennium Development Goals (2003). Kabeer has carried out extensive training and served as an advisor to a number of national and international NGOs as well as international development agencies.

“ICRW has been leading on issues that are of major concern to all those concerned with women’s empowerment and gender justice across the world. I have been following its work over the years and I am very pleased to be joining its Board,” said Kabeer.

Firoza Mehrotra is a former Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer with nearly 40 years experience working both at the policy and field levels in India. She has extensive experience in the areas of gender equality, women’s empowerment, child development, adolescents, population, general administration, rural development and governance.

Mehrotra worked at the United Nations Population Fund as a gender specialist, and at the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) – now UN Women – in South Asia as the Deputy Regional Program Director. She has a distinguished track record working on women’s issues with governments, civil society – especially women’s groups – and research institutions in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Her areas of expertise are gender responsive budgeting, home-based workers, combating violence against women, adolescents and early childcare.

“I am truly excited to be part of an organization whose mission and vision mirror my own interests and passion,” said Mehrotra.

ICRW’s Board of Directors is now composed of 20 members who bring a variety of experience and insight from their respective fields. Through their expertise in research, politics, business, global development, education, media, and economics, the Board of Directors supports ICRW’s mission  to advance women, promote gender equality and eradicate poverty.
