Monday, March 13

Successes and Barriers for LBT Women’s Economic Empowerment

Chloe Schwenke, Director of Violence, Rights and Inclusion at ICRW will be speaking at this event on how Lesbian, bisexual and trans (LBT) women face structural and societal barriers that can hinder them from accessing skills and opportunities.

Addressing Inequalities in Care Work to Achieve Women’s Economic Empowerment

Oxfam and the Government of Costa Rica are hosting this official side event, co-hosted by ICRW, on the topic of addressing inequalities in care work to achieve women’s economic empowerment. ICRW’s Director of Policy and Advocacy Lyric Thompson will speak about recent work supporting the UN HLP’s care working group.

This side event, hosted by Save the Children, will facilitate an interactive discussion between girls, civil society organizations, UN agencies, academia and the private sector on the actions needed at global, regional and national levels to secure sufficient, equitable, gender-responsive and efficient investment in girls. The discussion will also highlight measures needed to remove cost barriers to services and to ensure minimum financial security for all children. ICRW’s Director of Policy and Advocacy Lyric Thompson will be speaking on investments to end child marriage

The Secretary-General’s First 100 Days: Toward a more feminist United Nations

Sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica and ICRW, this official side event will reflect on the current state of women’s rights and leadership at the United Nations, highlight the Secretary-General’s progress on gender equality and women’s rights to date and present the proposed agenda for his leadership compiled by ICRW and other leading civil society advocates. The event will include a discussion among UN staff and CSW delegates across government and civil society, including ICRW Director of Gender, Economic Empowerment and Livelihood Sarah Gammage.

Women, Work, Mobility, Development and Economic Justice

This event will feature a conversation about the right to work and economic justice for women in the context of women’s economic human rights. Speakers and participants will explore how economic policies shape the realities for women migrant workers and how economic justice and migrant human rights should inform and benefit each other to see real improvements for women migrant workers. ICRW Director of Gender, Economic Empowerment and Livelihoods Sarah Gammage will be speaking on gender, migration, work and care deficits.

Reflecting on The Secretary General’s First 100 Days: Progress for Women?

This civil society event, hosted by ICRW will assess the new Secretary-General’s progress on gender equality and women’s rights to date, present a proposed agenda for his leadership and engage in a discussion among UN staff and CSW delegates across government and civil society. This event will launch the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW)’s report, Toward a More Feminist United Nations, which gathers expert insights and makes recommendations for transformative and practical steps that the Secretary-General, his staff, and UN agencies can make in achieving gender equality across the UN system, in both its policies and practices. Challenging Orthodox Macroeconomic Policy to Promote Gender Equality and Women’s Rights

There is growing awareness of, and mobilization around, the impact of macroeconomic policy on gender equality and women’s rights. A number of women’s rights organizations, CSOs and workers’ organizations are working on interrelated areas where changes in government economic policy are needed to promote gender equality and women’s rights. Sarah Gammage, ICRW’s Director of Gender, Economic Empowerment and Livelihoods, will be speaking on this panel on the topic of unpaid care work.

Bridging the Divide: Uniting U.S. and Global Women’s Agendas through Intersectionality and Inclusivity

This YWCA event, co-sponsored by ICRW, will bring together experts to discuss how women’s rights advocates in the U.S. and globally are working to build a movement that represents everyone, including the most marginalized, tying women’s rights issues to other pressing social issues of our time, including poverty, disability, ethnicity, health and more. ICRW Policy and Advocacy Director Lyric Thompson will speak to inclusion in research and advocacy.

Supporting Feminist Movement Building for Planet 50-50 by 2030

Cooper Union Great Hall

This UN Women event, co-sponsored by ICRW, will feature leaders and activists from civil society, global institutions, and local and national governments will reflect on challenges and discuss emerging opportunities for strengthening movement building to ensure the achievement of gender equality and the women’s rights agenda – Planet 50-50 by 2030.  ICRW Director of Policy and Advocacy Lyric Thompson will speak about ICRW’s feminist UN paper series.
