PBS will present on Oct. 1 and 2 a four-hour television series based on the best-selling book, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” by journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Filmed in 10 countries – Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Liberia – the series introduces women and girls living in difficult circumstances who are fighting bravely to change their situation.
The series premieres in the United States with international broadcasts to follow. It is just one element of the Half the Sky movement, in which ICRW is a partner. The movement is taking place across a variety of platforms with an eye to end the oppression of women and girls worldwide. It includes web components, interactive games, educational videos and classroom curriculum to inspire people to get involved.
