ICRW on Oct. 19 hosted "Women: An Emerging Market," the third gathering in our Passports to Progress discussion series. This latest conversation, moderated by BBC World News Anchor Katty Kay, focused on how improving women’s ability to earn a living can drive global economic growth. Held at the National Press Club, Kay was joined on stage by Gayle Smith, special assistant to President Obama and senior director of the National Security Council, Nemat (Minouche) Shafik, deputy director of the International Monetary Fund and Anju Malhotra, vice president of research, innovation and impact at ICRW.

ICRW on June 8 hosted “When She is Safe...” the second gathering in our Passports to Progress discussion series. The conversation focused on solutions to end violence against women worldwide and was moderated by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, deputy director of the Council on Foreign Relations’ Women and Foreign Policy Program, ICRW board member and author of “The Dressmaker of Khair Khana.” Lemmon was joined on stage by panelists Mary Ellsberg, vice president of research at programs at ICRW, Abigail Disney, filmmaker and philanthropist, and Donald Steinberg, deputy director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

ICRW kicked off its 35th anniversary celebration on March 8, International Women’s Day, with "Game-changing Innovations for Women." Part I features ICRW President Sarah Degnan Kambou and the Champions for Change award presentation to Gap Inc. for its innovative factory-based education program for female garment workers. Part II features the evening's discussion, moderated by NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell. The panel included USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah; Cherie Blair, former British first lady and founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women; Tim Hanstad, president and CEO of Landesa; and Bobbi Silten, chief foundation officer for Gap Inc. This event launched Passports to Progress, a year-long series to discuss critical issues likely to shape the lives of women and girls in developing countries in the coming years.

Boys and Girls for Equality

In India, it’s unusual for the school setting to be used for anything other than academic instruction. But that’s exactly where an International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) program is taking place, one that encourages students to discuss such sensitive matters as society's expectations of women and men, violence in their community and what happens to their bodies during puberty. It’s called the Gender Equity Movement in Schools, or GEMS.

The Sport of Respect

Cricket is omnipresent in Mumbai, India. The city also is home to “Parivartan,” a program of the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW). Parivartan uses cricket to draw in boys and young men to teach that aggressive behavior doesn’t make them “real men” – nor does it aid in winning cricket matches. With the ultimate aim to reduce violence against women, the program helps boys and men view women and girls as equals, and treat them with respect.
