Child Marriage Legislation

The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have introduced legislation to curb child marriage.

Child marriage is a harmful traditional practice that weds young people, almost exclusively girls to men who are usually significantly older than their new bride. Prevalent in many developing countries, child marriage puts girls, some as young as 7 or 8, at risk for detrimental economic, health and educational consequences.

Despite some 51 million girls who currently are married, this issue remains on the back burner for most U.S. Congress members. ICRW, with the help of coalition partners, successfully encouraged both houses of Congress to introduce legislation to curb child marriage.

During ICRW's Week of Action (Feb. 25-29), we encourage you to raise your voice against the widespread practice of child marriage that takes place in many of the world's poorest countries.

This week is your chance to take a stand against the violence, denial of education and health risks that child brides face. This is your chance to stand up for the human rights of girls around the world.

Get Involved

There are several ways that you can accomplish this. We've listed a few tried-and-true methods of effecting change:

Call Your Member of Congress

Encourage him/her to endorse child marriage legislation. This is especially important if your member of Congress appears in the top layers of the Congressional target list.
