HOW WE WORK

Research | Technical Support | Advocacy

ICRW's work has three distinct dimensions — research, technical support for capacity building, and advocacy— and is informed by the following essential ingredients for sustainable development:

  • Supporting women as economic providers and innovators, nurturers and caregivers, community leaders, and agents of change;
  • Ensuring women's control of economic resources; guaranteeing their reproductive rights, health and nutrition; strengthening their capabilities; and increasing their political power;
  • Fostering equity and respect for the human rights and dignity of all;
  • Shaping policy and programs based on sound research and data; and
  • Building collaborative, mutually rewarding partnerships and social networks to share skills and build capacity.

Research

ICRW's research is empirically sound, impartial and non-ideological. For more than 30 years, our studies and data have demonstrated the critical roles that women play in social and economic development.

Our research is especially useful because it tackles the realities of complex, interlinked issues — for example, how women's economic status is linked to their health — and focuses on results. Learn more about our Research Areas.

Technical Support For Capacity Building

ICRW works with organizations throughout the world to develop gender-equitable, sustainable solutions to poverty. We help our partners integrate women's needs and concerns into the design and implementation of their programs and policies, find practical ways to achieve greater impact, and make sure their resources are well spent.

  • We help develop analytical skills to ask the right questions and interpret the answers.
  • We assist in finding practical ways to improve the delivery and quality of a variety of services for women and girls, including financial, agricultural, health, nutrition and reproductive health services.
  • We show how to evaluate the impact of programs and policies.

Advocacy

Insight is only the beginning. ICRW not only conducts the research and provides technical assistance, but we also reach out to inform experts, leaders and policy-makers — within government and international agencies — of our findings and experience.

ICRW's External Relations team works to ensure that our research findings create gender-equitable policies and programs through:

  • Targeted strategic communications that bring timely, accessible information to key decision makers;
  • Publications tailored for a wide variety of audiences — technical reports for program practitioners and academics as well as policy briefs and accessable articles for the general public;
  • Forums for dialogue and consensus building among key decision makers, opinion leaders, issue experts and program specialists;
  • Media outreach to influence opinion and generate news coverage of issues and events; and
  • Participation in coalitions and partnerships to advocate for gender-equitable policies and programs that improve the lives of women and girls.
