ICRW President Testifies on Women and HIV/AIDS

Wed., April 13

ICRW President Geeta Rao Gupta testified today on the U.S. response to global HIV/AIDS before the U.S. House International Relations Committee, which is chaired by Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL). She emphasized that to curb the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the president’s Plan for AIDS Relief must move beyond the “ABC” approach (to abstain, be faithful and use condoms) to include programs and interventions that address women’s and girls’ specific vulnerabilities, including child marriage and the needs of married women, violence against women, and the lack of property and inheritance rights for women and girls in many countries. ICRW Helps Conclude Five-City U.S. Tour to Highlight Anti-AIDS Efforts for Women and Girls

ICRW President Geeta Rao Gupta spoke March 8 — International Women's Day — at a Congressional Women and AIDS breakfast, concluding a five-city tour sponsored by UNAIDS, M.A.C AIDS Fund, U.N. Foundation and World Vision to educate Americans about the impact of AIDS on women and girls. Read her remarks.

This tour builds on the momentum of World AIDS Day 2004, Empowered Women are Key: Women and Global HIV/AIDS.


Education Starts in School

Sun., March 6

David S. Broder’s Sunday column in The Washington Post, "Education Starts in School," highlights the work of ICRW and its partners to achieve universal primary education for girls and boys, and greater investments in girls’ secondary education. At least 100 million youngsters — the majority girls — are not attending school at any point of their lives, Broder writes. “That denial blights their individual prospects,” he adds, “but also, as I learned from Geeta Rao Gupta and her colleagues, damages their countries.”

Missing the Mark: Girls' Education and the Way Forward

Wed., March 2

ICRW, Center for Global Development and the U.N. Millennium Project hosted a conference March 2 on progress toward the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of universal primary education and gender parity in primary and secondary education. Speakers included: Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), Sen. Charles Hagel (R-NE), and Jeffrey Sachs, director of the U.N. Millennium Project.

Educators from developing countries discussed progress and challenges in eliminating the gender gap in education as well as ways to speed progress in raising girls’ enrollment and retention.
