Social Science Researcher, Population and Social Transitions

The Social Science Researcher will function as both a leader and team member and will have substantial research, technical and project management responsibility. The areas of research are likely to include the empowerment of adolescents/young women, the relationship between fertility declines and women's empowerment, women's leadership as a strategy for development, gender and technology. The incumbent will conduct a range of technical research, coordinate project teams and their work, participate in proposal development, strategic thinking and donor/partner relations.

Primary Duties:

  • Develops innovative Works as a leader and team member with technical and management responsibility for projects.
  • Responsible for leading research programs and broader initiatives, conceptual and instrument design, program design.
  • Analyzes and synthesizes research findings on complex issues and develops products relevant to a range of audiences.
  • methodologies and approaches for researching gender and development issues.
  • Provides technical support to specific partners, including conceptual and instrument design, program design, research training and capacity building, data management and analysis, and dissemination of project results in presentations, reports, and published papers.
  • Responsible for project staff management, partnership engagement, and budgetary management.

Required Education, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. or MA and equivalent experience in demography, public health, sociology, economics or related field, with strong substantive background in gender as it relates to population, reproductive health, poverty, and broader development issues.
  • Seven ( 7) or more years post-doctoral experience (or 10 post-masters) with strong exposure to on-the-ground interventions and to the challenges of program implementation and evaluation.
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills required, to include a proficiency in one or more of the following statistical software: SPSS, STATA, ATLAS, as well as widely-known research measures (e.g., ARRM, HBM, etc). Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation abilities. Proven ability to work collaboratively with professionals at different levels, including colleagues, partners, and donor organizations. Specific experience in field research, exposure to evaluation research, survey methodologies and implementation required. Experience in management of projects and on the ground work on field based programs strongly preferred. Evaluation expertise highly desirable.
