WHY GIVE TO ICRW?
Improve the lives of adolescent girls
Across the developing world, 51 million girls are married as child brides, increasing their risk of negative economic, health and educational consequences. ICRW and its local partner in Maharashtra, India, designed and evaluated a program
to prevent early marriage. The program taught life skills to unmarried girls and worked with parents to persuade them not to marry off their young daughters. After three years, the average age at marriage for all girls in the area rose by one year. And decision makers took notice. The government of Maharashtra now is scaling up the program to reach more girls and their families throughout the state.
Help End child marriage
ICRW's longstanding work and research on child marriage inspired and informed PBS/NOW's one-hour documentary on child marriage in Guatemala, India and Niger reported by Senior Correspondent Maria Hinojosa. The nationally televised broadcast raised the consciousness of millions of viewers and continues to educate online viewers around the globe. ICRW shared the documentary with members of Congress who are considering legislation to increase U.S. support for programs to end child marriage.
stop AIDS BY FIGHTING stigma
HIV Stigma Drives the Spread of the Epidemic by Undermining Efforts for Prevention, Treatment and Care
ICRW's seminal research on HIV stigma and discrimination led to the design of an anti-stigma toolkit for use with local communities to fight the stigma against people living with HIV and AIDS. The toolkit now is being used locally by faith-based, community-based and nongovernmental organizations in countries throughout Africa and Southeast Asia.
