Why Give to ICRW?

Because when women's realities go unseen, global development problems cannot be solved.

• Agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa is 20 percent less than it would be if women had the same access to resources as do men.

• Mothers' illiteracy and lack of schooling results in higher rates of infant and child mortality, and higher rates of malnutrition.

Because when women are overlooked, families, communities and nations cannot become self-reliant.

• Women produce between 70 percent and 80 percent of the food in sub-Saharan Africa yet many do not own or control the land it's grown on.

• Women represent 70 percent of the world's illiterate.

ICRW's research and advocacy lets decision makers see and understand women's lives — and ensures that women are taken into account.

• Our groundbreaking work on women and HIV/AIDS, and the underlying gender inequality that makes women vulnerable, has helped gather widespread support for the development of microbicides — products that women can apply and control to protect themselves from infection.

• Our extensive investigation into violence against women in India — and ICRW's televised public education campaign there — helped create a public outcry for the government to take concrete steps and introduce national legislation to protect women against domestic violence.

ICRW's work depends on support from private donors — individuals, foundations and corporations — who share our commitment to human rights and recognize the need for reliable information and analysis to build policies and programs that put resources in women's hands and rights within their reach.
