From Behind the Scenes to the Forefront: Gender Equality, Social Institutions and the Millennium Development Goals

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Development Centre, together with the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), will hold a lunchtime panel discussion to address the role that social institutions play in perpetuating inequality between women and men in three specific dimensions: violence against women, political participation and child marriage. Panelists will highlight the ways in which these inequalities hinder progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. They also will suggest how social institutions could be transformed so they may more effectively lead to equitable and sustainable development.
