Modeling National HIV Responses
Dr. Lydia Mungherera is an HIV-positive widowed mother of two who has worked as a clinician, health educator and passionate advocate for people living with HIV and AIDS in Uganda. She is working with ICRW on an innovative project that aims to strengthen gender strategies for national HIV/AIDS policies that can translate into impact on the ground. Lydia is a member of the project’s Uganda advisory group, which mobilizes key stakeholders representing HIV-related expertise from civil society, government and donors.
She is the founder of Mama’s Club, a community-based psychosocial support group for HIV-positive mothers and their children. Lydia also founded Uganda Cares, the first treatment centre to give free antiretroviral drugs in the Masaka District.
